A family trade

My father (pictured right) is a university instructor for over 40 years. Growing up I got to see first hand the transformative power of education. My belief in that possibility is the foundation of my teaching.

Some teaching testimonial (of course only the good ones)

  • “Best module I've taken so far at UCL. Tom was an incredible lecturer who clearly knew so much about the content he was teaching. Loved the case study sessions we did! The seminars were very well planned too. The assignments have been very interesting and engaging so far. I loved this module!!!:

  • “The Professor is great and extremely engaging. It never feels as though we are just being presented the book again. The teacher was very personable, almost like a friend, and did a GREAT job engaging the class in discussion (one of my most favorite things).”

  • “Thomas’s excitement about the topics made it easier to understand and retain the information. UMD needs more professors like Thomas. His energy and overall being modest about his knowledge made a big difference.”

  • “The true highlight of this course was the honestly inspiring teaching style of the instructor, Tom Yan. Rather than force the class to pay attention through strict rules, Yan’s commitment to and love of this material caused the class to feel almost obligated to pay attention and engage in class because of how nice of a guy he is. He added more material in lectures than what was in the book, which was cool.”

  • “The professor was very compassionate and passionate about his work. It showed through to the students and became visible that he enjoyed his work. It was clear that he knew what he was teaching. Amazing professor.”

  • “Tom is an amazing and engaging professor who made a lot of effort to make class fun and relevant and was great with responding to student needs reasonably. One of my favorite professors at Smith so far!”

  • “Tom is an amazing teacher who makes it personalised and interesting to learn about. I don't think there can be a single person doing this module that doesn't like him. By far the best professor I've had in my time at UCL.”

  • “Prof. Yan was absolutely great. I think he was an amazing professor and instructor, with a great personality. He made the class interesting, engaging, and exciting. You could see his passion for what he was teaching, and it really showed in the quality of his lectures. He was funny, understanding and responsive to concerns, and overall a great teacher.”

  • “I loved Professor Yan. He was very concerned with making sure we learned the material in a fun and engaging way. He often included multiple forms of media and also made projects that related to pop culture but also the course material. I also loved how he included a lot of psychology in the teachings as a way to validate management material. All around an amazing teacher!”

  • “Tom Yan was the best professor I had all year and maybe even the entire time at UMD. He is very passionate about his work and you can tell that by the way he presents himself every day. He does a great job of not just trying to relate to students but actually taking the time to get to know us and really care for us. I would recommend him twelve times out of ten.”
